A water softener is something more and more people are looking into for their homes. If you’ve ever been to Downstream Casino, you would know that showering and using their water feels awesome on your skin. In fact, soft water is water which is devoid of bivalent minerals – approximately less than one grain per gallon of water. But is having a water softener good for you and your family? What are the pros and cons?
Water Softener Facts and Myths
-
Do Water Softeners Take Out All the Minerals in Water (And is This Bad for Our Bodies)?
While our bodies need magnesium and calcium, we often get what we need from our diet. In fact, spring water (which is what many people prefer) has extremely low levels of calcium in them – around 50.6 milligrams per liter.
-
Does Using a Water Softener Leave Residue on Your Skin?
When people first shower using softened water, many people notice that their skin feels slick. Contrary to popular belief, this is not a “film” per say. It is the body’s natural oils interacting with clean water. More often than not, we are so used to showering in hard water that many of us have gotten used to coming out of the shower with dry skin, weighed down hair, and the like. Using a water softener, however, gives you an entirely different experience.
-
Do Water Softeners Add to Much Sodium in Water?
The amount of sodium introduced into the water by a water softener is minuscule. There are approximately 7.4 milligrams of sodium per quart of softened water. An egg with no salt has 59 milligrams of sodium.
The reason for the sodium in water softening systems is for a process called ionization. Magnesium and calcium are the minerals which makes hard water, “hard.” They carry a double positive charge whereas sodium carries a single electric charge. Ions are the electrically charged part of an element. The process that happens between these two electrical charges during water softening is called an “exchange.” In essence, the sodium replaces the magnesium and calcium so that these minerals are then flushed out of your water supply.

How Much Do Water Softeners Cost?
Water softeners can cost anywhere from $400 to upwards of $3000 depending on the size of your home and depending on whether you are looking to buy a system outright or rent one instead. Many water companies in Springfield, Mo. offer payment options along with scheduled maintenance. Typically, servicing your system once a year does the job!
Keep in mind, hard water can do a lot of damage to your appliances and fixtures. Depending on what it is you are needing for you and others in your household, it may be in your highest interest to invest in a water softener system, or it may not be in your interest to purchase a water softener system.
Why You Would Want a Water Softener System
If you are someone who is looking for any of the following for your home, perhaps doing a little research or calling an expert to come out and give you a hassle-free quotation may be in your highest interest.
- Extended lifetime of appliances such as your washer, dryer and dishwasher is a side-effect of having a water softening system.
- Many people save money on things like soap and detergents after purchasing a water softener system. This is great for medium to large families!
- If you are looking to save money on shampoos, conditioners, lotions and the like, purchasing a water softener may be for you. Hard water dries out your skin and hair, whereby soft water conditions it!
- If you are someone who can’t stand the look of water spots on your dishes and glasses, purchasing a water softening system is known for getting rid of these!
- The presence of soft water improves the efficiency of your heater. With hard water, your heating system works harder because it has to warm up the minerals in the water which also takes longer to do. This results in less heat loss and more energy output.
- Many people who purchase a water softening system receive their ROI or return on investment within two to four years of purchasing it. If you are planning on moving, purchasing a water softening system may not be in your highest interest. But if you are living in your forever home, this may be just the thing you need to keep your forever home happy, healthy and working efficiently!
