After a long day, a hot shower may sound relaxing, but did you know there are many benefits to taking cold showers? In fact, it can help benefit various parts of your body including your skin, lungs, and thyroid.
Cold Showers vs Hot Showers
Cold Showers
-
Calms itchy skin
-
Increases circulation
-
Reduces muscle soreness post-workout
-
Can help boost weight loss
-
Improves hair and skin
In addition to all of these benefits of taking cold showers, did you know that it also stimulates your vagus nerve? The vagus nerve carries an extensive range of signals from your organs, digestive system, and brain. It serves as a modulator of the brain-gut axis and also affects mood, pain management, well-being, and resilience.
Hot Showers
-
Provides relief from respiratory symptoms
-
Helps with blemishes
-
Helps with muscle relaxation
Unfortunately, hot showers can dry out and irritate your skin. In fact, higher temperatures make it easier for skin to dry out and worsen pre-existing eczema. They can also increase blood pressure too.
In summary, which is better? Hot showers or cold showers? According to Adam Friedman, MD, alternating may be the best solution or settling for a lukewarm shower. Afterwards, apply a moisturizer to dampen the skin after bathing.
You could also alternate by starting off with a cold shower and standing in it for one minute and then switching to hot water and standing in that for one minute. You can alternate between hot and cold for a few cycles.
What Else Can We Do to Improve Our Showers?
Especially in the Ozarks, what makes showering worse is the amount of limescale in our water supply. In fact, you can see the buildup on your faucets and showerheads. It’s that white residue that can, eventually, clog your faucets and showers. There is an easy fix for this though: purchasing a whole home water softening system.
Benefits of a Whole Home Water Softener
-
Extends the lifetime of appliances such as your washer, dryer, and dishwasher is a side-effect of having a water softening system.
-
Many people save money on things like soap and detergents after purchasing a water softener system. This is great for medium to large families!
-
If you are looking to save money on shampoos, conditioners, lotions and the like, purchasing a water softener may be for you. Hard water dries out your skin and hair, whereby soft water conditions it!
-
If you are someone who can’t stand the look of water spots on your dishes and glasses, purchasing a water softening system is known for getting rid of these!
-
The presence of soft water improves the efficiency of your heater. With hard water, your heating system works harder because it has to warm up the minerals in the water which also takes longer to do. This results in less heat loss and more energy output.
-
Many people who purchase a water softening system receive their ROI or return on investment within two to four years of purchasing it. If you are planning on moving, purchasing a water softening system may not be in your highest interest. But if you are living in your forever home, this may be just the thing you need to keep your forever home happy, healthy, and working efficiently!
