The ‘Silent’ spread of polio in New York and surrounding areas are driving the CDC to consider additional vaccinations for some. Polio has been identified in NYC’s sewage, and Mayor Adams is “addressing the threats as they come before us…. With the assistance of Washington, DC.”
While most people in the United States are protected from Polio via vaccination, that still leaves unvaccinated and under-vaccinated people vulnerable. This virus most commonly spreads through feces, and in less common circumstances, via an infected person sneezing or coughing.
Symptoms of Polio
Polio is a contagious viral illness that can cause nerve injury which leads to paralysis and even death. While the last case of naturally occurring, polio was in 1979 in the United States, it continues to affect children and adults in parts of Asia and Africa.
Keep in mind, some people develop symptoms from the poliovirus can contract a type of polio that doesn’t lead to paralysis. These people usually experience mild, flu-like symptoms.
Symptoms of paralytic polio include the following:
-
Muscle wasting/atrophy.
-
Progressive muscle or joint weakness and pain.
-
Sleep-related breathing disorders such as sleep apnea.
-
Decreased tolerance of cold temperatures.
-
Loss of reflexes.
-
Loose and floppy limbs (flaccid paralysis).
CDC Investigating Polio in New York
The wastewater infected with Polio was found in Rockland and Orange Counties. A team of detectives were sent to the areas last week. While there has been a serious drop in cases since the vaccine was invented in 1955, only 86.2% of NYC children between 6 months and 5 years old have received all three doses of the vaccine.
Some missed appointments due to the pandemic, others have missed due to religious purposes, and others refuse to vaccinate their children.
