As you may know, earlier this year in March, there was a major recall on Alkaline Water Bottles with the “Real Water” brand. The Real Water Brand, with facilities in Henderson, NV and Mesa, AZ have undergone and completed inspections, but the non-viral hepatitis cases have been increasing. Additionally, while the Real Water brand has undergone some inspections, the water company is still not cooperating fully with the FDA.
As a result, the FDA is doubling down – especially after becoming aware that the Real Water alkaline water is still being offered for sale online. As of April 28th, dozens have been reported infected with another 5 children being hospitalized. The recall also includes 1.5 liter, 1 liter, 500 ml, and 1-gallon ready-to-drink alkaline water bottles and the 4 oz. concentrate.
Many questions remain as, to how the water was contaminated. Over 11 days, 5 children were at risk of needing a liver transplant according to CBS. As of right now, the FDA is urging the public to report any Real Water products being sold in their area or online to reach out to their regional FDA Consumer Complaint Coordinator.
The Natural Resources Defense Council is now pushing for stricter regulations on bottled water.
What is Acute Non-Viral Hepatitis
Acute non-viral hepatitis is inflammation that can lead to liver failure. Non-viral hepatitis can be caused by contaminated water, food, dietary and herbal supplements, wild plants and mushrooms, and even via medications, drugs and alcohol.
Symptoms include fever, fatigue, loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, dark urine, jaundice, yellow eyes, and/or gray-colored bowel movements.
If you have consumed any Real Water brand water products and are experiencing symptoms of hepatitis, you should contact your doctor and inform them of your possible non-viral hepatitis exposure.
