Residents of Jackson, Mississippi is under a boil order due to complications at a water treatment plant. Additionally, some residents have low or no water pressure at all. It all started when a worker discovered a problem that the O.B. Curtis Water Treatment Plant. City engineer Dr. Charles Williams said they were forced to shut down a portion of the plant after it was discovered that a bad batch of chemicals somehow got into the water.
It is predominantly Southern Jackson that is experiencing low or no water pressure. Last Tuesday, the water pressure rose to 78 psi (up from 75 psi), but the safe zone is between 85 and 90 psi.
The city will continue to be under a boil order, but it is expected to be lifted as early as Thursday, so long as the Department of Health conducts two positive water tests. Here’s how you can find out whether or not a boil order affects you. The city also distributed 10 pallets of bottled water to residents on Tuesday.
The question that we asked upon reading this news is why put Jackson under a boil order? A boil order is designed to get rid of pathogens, viruses, and bacteria in tap water. It’s not necessarily known for getting rid of pre-existing chemicals!

-
Disinfect it
If your water is clear, you can add unscented bleach – 1/8 teaspoon to 1 gallon of water. Mix well and wait about 30 minutes before drinking. If your tap water is cloudy, you may want to add ¼ teaspoon of unscented household bleach to every 1 gallon of water.
