If your region is issued a boil order, there are households that are affected by this and households that are not. If your local health authorities issue a boil water advisory, most people should use bottled water or boil tap water because your community’s water is, or could be, contaminated with germs and bacteria that can make you sick.
Please note that if you are going to boil your tap water, you need to bring it to a rolling boil for at least two minutes. Then remove it from your stovetop and let it cool for several minutes before using it.
Here are some boil order FAQs:
- If under a boil order, use bottled or boiled water for drinking, and to prepare and cook food.
- As stated above, if bottled water is not available, bring water to a full rolling boil for 2 minutes (at elevations above 6,500 feet, boil for 3 minutes), then allow it to cool before use.
- Do not use water from any appliance connected to your water line, such as ice and water from a refrigerator. This water is connected with your region’s water supply and could be contaminated.
- Breastfeeding is the best infant feeding option. If you formula-feed your child, provide ready-to-use formula, if available.
Contaminated water affects everything from bathing, handwashing, brushing teeth, washing dishes, laundry, cleaning and even caring for pets. Sure, our pets may not catch the same illnesses we do, but it doesn’t hurt to look after their well being too!
How to Know When A Boil Order Doesn’t Affect You
Many people wonder if a boil order affects them if they have a whole-home filtration system. The answer to this depends on what time of whole-home filtration system you have installed and when the last time it was maintained.
For example, a RO system can filter out bacteria, germs and other contaminants. If it has been maintained properly and is a certified system (such as a waterlogic system), you should be ok. However, it is always good to get a water test just to be sure.
A UV system is known for killing all germs and bacteria in your water system. Again, getting a test will help provide peace of mind. If you do already have a UV system, be sure to change your bulbs yearly to ensure your system is doing its’ job.
Ideally, the best would be to couple a UV system with an RO system and to have a sure-fire maintenance plan. Regardless of what unit(s) you want to install, there will always be maintenance needed in order to ensure your water purification system is performing optimally. Luckily at Aquasani – based in SW Missouri, Mid-Missouri, and NW Arkansas – we have built-in maintenance plans that take the guesswork out of how and when to give your unit some TLC.
Using our automated system, we call you to let you know when your water system needs maintenance and schedule a tech to come out and service that system at a time that suits you.
A boil order is not to be taken lightly. To ensure the safety of you and your family, you can
- get your water tested
- install a whole-home water purification system and maintenance plan
- or be sure to boil your water or used bottled water. Keep in mind, bottled water creates problems in our landfill systems. Naturally, the easiest and safest way to go about this is to check out some of our whole-home water purification systems!
