Many people drink tap water straight from their faucet, but did you know there are several contaminants in our tap water? Specifically, for Osage Beach / Lake of the Ozarks, Missouri, we did a quick check on the EWG’s (Environmental Working Group) website which has systematically run water tests and checks throughout the Ozarks and the rest of the United States. It was found that there are approximately seven (8) contaminants within our Osage Beach water supply which, while above EWG (Environmental Working Group) guidelines, are still present in our water.
Out of these seven (8) contaminants in our tap water, ALL of them are known to increase the risk of cancer. Again, this is all stated in the EWG website. We found this to be a unique tool: all you have to do is click here, punch in your zip code, and it will bring up the results of the water quality tests completed in that area. While Osage Beach, Mo. is in compliance with legally mandated federal standards, there is still one obvious fact: we still have contaminants in our tap water!
What Kind of Contaminants are in Our Tap Water?
According to the EWG website, these are the following contaminants in Springfield, Mo. water supply:
Bromodichloromethane,
Chloroform,
Chromium (hexavalent),
Barium,
Flouride
Mnaganese
Nitrate & Nitrited,
Radium (which is above the EWG health guidelines)
If you have ever seen the movie Erin Brachovich, you would know the dangers of having Chromium Hexavalent in our water supply. Based on a true story, the carcinogenic chemical is known as chromium-6 and is a very real thing. In fact, it’s so real that a recent analysis of federal drinking water data by the Environmental Working Group (EWG), found an unsettling amount of it in sinks across the country. “In the tap water of at least 200 million Americans in all 50 states, chromium-6 has been detected above the minimal risk level,” says David Andrews, PhD, an EWG senior scientist.
How to Clean Dirty Tap Water in Osage Beach, Missouri.
Luckily for us residing in Osage Beach and the Lake of the Ozarks, there are many ways we can clean dirty tap water and rid our homes of gross bacteria and other contaminants which could be thriving in your water.
1. PURCHASE A REVERSE OSMOSIS SYSTEM
On the EWG website, there is a chart that shows how powerful having a Reverse Osmosis system is for your home in Osage Beach.
Using a membrane to purify water, an RO system removes all bacteria and viruses from the water, and can also remove chemical contaminants such as chromium, lead and sodium (to name a few) and may reduce the amount of other contaminants in your tap water such as arsenic, fluoride, radium, sulfate, and phosphorus (to name a few).
2. PURCHASE A UV SYSTEM
A UV system cleans dirty tap water by zapping every drop of water that comes into your home with a UV light. The beautiful thing about a UV system for your home or office is that maintenance is relatively minor – all you have to do is change the bulb every year and your UV system will keep on destroying all the bacteria, germs, and other microbes hanging out in your water system.
3. PURCHASE A WATER SOFTENER SYSTEM
Hard water is known to clog pipes, shower heads, and can eventually ruin your home appliances such as washers, dryers, dishwashers, etc (not to mention carry all kinds of bacteria and contaminants). By purchasing a water softener system from Aquasani at Lake of the Ozarks, not only does our water softener systems remove positively charged ions typically from magnesium and calcium. While water softener systems don’t typically remove or kill bacteria and germs, you can couple it with a UV system.
4. PURCHASE A WATER COOLER SYSTEM (FOR THE OFFICE OR FOR AT HOME)
While we don’t typically shower in the office (unless you work at a fitness center or sports gym), you can always opt to purchase a water cooler system. While there are bottle dispensers, a water cooler system never runs out of water, and you never have to refill those bottles and try to lift them onto the dispenser every time it needs to be changed.
