We already know there are several issues with drinking tap water, but did you know that you can get hepatitis from tap water? Hepatitis A, or HAV, is often present in the feces of an infected person and is most often transmitted through consuming contaminated water or food. In short, yes, if contaminated, a person can be exposed to the virus and get hepatitis from tap water.
In fact, on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s website, write that it is very common in wells. Keep in mind, when properly maintained and installed, most people won’t have any issues. However, if any private water source, including wells, is exposed to hepatitis contamination, there will be a reason to take action. The most common ways well water is contaminated is either by
- being submerged in flood water,
- if the wells are dug shallow,
- and polluted stormwater runoff.
Typically, adults show symptoms of hepatitis A two to six weeks after being infected. Children, on the other hand, often show no symptoms.
How to Kill & Remove the Hepatitis From Tap Water
To kill or inactivate Hepatitis A, bring your water to a rolling boil for at least a minute, let it cool down, and then store it in a sanitized container. Keep in mind that hepatitis A is spread predominantly through saliva or urine, and not necessarily blood or blood products.
Some common symptoms of hepatitis A include the following:
Dark urine,
Loss of appetite,
Fatigue,
Vomiting,
Fever,
Stomach pain,
Jaundice of yellowing of the eyes and skin.
It is highly recommended to get your water tested. You can do so by calling Aquasani (if you are in NW Arkansas, SW Missouri, or Central Missouri). We can come out and test your water for hepatitis. Or, you can contact your local health department for recommended procedures.
