There is one question we hear over and over again from our clients; can the coronavirus be transferred through water? In light of the Covid-19 pandemic, we understand why everyone is anxious about getting or passing this virus. While many of our water treatment systems cleans and rids your home or restaurant’s water of viruses, the short and quick answer to this question is no. As of this time, the Coronavirus cannot be transferred through water.
How Is the Coronavirus Transmitted?
According to the FDA, the Covid-19 virus is passed person-to-person. The virus can spread from an infected person’s nose or mouth via small liquid particles when they cough, sneeze, speak, sing or breathe heavily. These liquid particles that carry the Covid-19 virus different in sizes and range from larger ‘respiratory droplets’ to smaller ‘aerosols’.
A person can catch COVID-19 when the virus gets into their mouth, nose or eyes. This happens more frequently when people are in direct or close contact (less than 1 metre apart) with an infected person.
The virus can also spread after infected people sneeze, cough on, or touch surfaces, or objects, such as tables, doorknobs and handrails. The Covid-19 virus can stay on surfaces and objects for up to a couple of days. In warmer settings or where there is sunlight, it has been found that the virus can die quicker. Other people may become infected by touching these contaminated surfaces, then touching their eyes, noses or mouths without having cleaned their hands first.
Water Treatment Systems that Rid Water of Viruses
Again, while Covid-19 is not transmitted via water sources (at the time this article was written), there are whole home water treatment systems that can rid your water supply of other viruses, bacteria, and other contaminants found in your home’s water supply.
For example, a RO (reverse osmosis) water treatment system has been known as one of the most efficient systems at ridding your water supply of viruses and contaminants. Another great recommendation for those on well water would be to couple your RO system with a UV filtration system.
While a water softener system is great for your skin, hair and appliances, it is more noted for ridding lime from your water supply. Sure! It makes your hair and skin feel great, and extends the life of your appliances and fixtures, it does not rid your water of any viruses or bacteria.
