Clean drinking water is something every human being on the planet needs, and yet an estimated 785 million people lack clean drinking water from a trusted source. In fact, out of all the water on the planet, only 2.5% of it is freshwater, and out of that 2.5% an even smaller amount is drinkable!
It’s an already well-known fact that we are facing a global water crisis. With increasing droughts and water shortages increasing exponentially over the last hundred years, it is time that we addressed the global water crisis.
Luckily, Korean engineers have developed a new desalination technique that can make ocean water drinkable in minutes.
Nanofiber Membrane Makes Ocean Water Drinkable in Minutes
Engineers at the Korea Institute of Civil Engineering and Building Technology (KICT) have developed co-axial electro-spun nanofiber membranes fabricated by an alternative nano-technology, which is electrospinning. It can prevent wetting issues and also improve the long-term stability of the membrane distillation process.
Note: “Wetting” happens when there is an exceedance of liquid entry pressure which leads to membrane fouling. This means that over time, the membrane can break down, until now.
The Korean engineers who are spearheading this invention use poly as the core and silica aerogel mixed with a low concentration of the polymer as the sheath to produce a composite membrane with a superhydrophobic surface. In other words, the membrane is more compact and has a longer life than other membranes.
This membrane was able to distill 99.99% of salt from ocean water while maintaining it’s structural integrity.
The main method used for the desalination of ocean water is reverse osmosis and it is used in factories around the world. Unfortunately, the industrial use of reverse osmosis uses an astounding amount of energy and creates a ton of harmful waste which is discharged back into the ocean and waterways.
In summary, this new technology may help ease the global water crisis. We are excited to see what comes about from this breaking edge technology!
About Reverse Osmosis
Industrially speaking, reverse osmosis does create a lot of hazardous waste while expending massive amounts of energy, but it isn’t the same for residential uses. In fact, installing a reverse osmosis system can do several things for you and your family:
-
It can remove lead from your drinking water.
-
Reverse osmosis can remove parasites from your drinking water.
-
It can also remove chloride out of your drinking water.
-
Reverse osmosis can also save you money (seriously, it costs pennies on the dollar per gallon of water as opposed to purchasing bottled water from the store.
The good news is that installing a reverse osmosis system in your home takes 97% of the impurities and pollutants out of your tap water! We can have our techs come by with the right filters and equipment you need for your unique customized set up.
