A wastewater treatment plant is a facility in which a combination of various processes (e.g., physical, chemical, and biological) are used to treat industrial wastewater and remove pollutants. The whole goal of a wastewater treatment plant is to remove as many suspended solids as possible before the remaining water (or effluent) is discharged back into the environment.
Wastewater treatment plants are necessary and vital for providing homes with treated water in order to minimize water-borne illnesses. Because the water taken is from open bodies of water, the water may contain harmful microorganisms. Therefore, it has to be treated before it can be cycled through our homes in the form of tap water.
How do Wastewater Treatment Facilities Treat Water?
Typical surface water treatment incorporates chemical coagulation, filtration, sedimentation, and disinfection to ensure the water is safe for consumption. There are two basic stages in the treatment of this water, known as primary and secondary. All in all though, there are a total of eight complete steps to treat wastewater.
Primary Stage
Solids are allowed to settle and be removed from the wastewater.
Secondary Stage
This stage uses biological processes to further purify wastewater.

Once the water has been discharged into a stream, river, or lake, it is further treated by the naturally occurring bacteria that remove the remaining organic waste. Here, the water is ready to re-enter the municipal water cycle. After treatment and sufficient disinfection, the water is discharged via a system of pressurized pipes and lifts to the areas within a town or city where it is needed.
While wastewater treatment facilities do remove many contaminants and pathogens, unfortunately, it is impossible to remove ALL of them. This is where getting a whole-home purification system can keep your family safe. Especially here in the Ozarks, there is so much lime in our tap water that it seriously affects the life span of our appliances and fixtures. This is where investing in a water softening system can come in handy!
Wastewater Treatment Plant Summary
The average American household uses approximately 300 gallons of water a day via baths and showers, brushing our teeth, watering our lawn, laundry, and cooking. Once we use this water, it leaves our household through a variety of drains into sewage systems. This water is then sent on a journey of cleaning, filtering, traveling, and ultimately finds its way back into our homes to use. And though it’s been through a wastewater plant, this does not mean that it is entirely safe or clean.
