Lake of the Ozarks Water Safety Advice – People are eager to get out of the house after the quarantine, but public officials say that it is more important than ever to stay safe and vigilant.
It’s no wonder that Lake of the Ozarks is a popular tourist destination. For one, it’s in the middle of Missouri making it within a comfortable driving distance for families, and two there’s over 1100 miles of shoreline making it easy for some to spread out (though not everyone does).
However, with distractions like cell phones, alcohol and loud music deadening our senses, public officials are cracking down on unnecessary tomfoolery in an effort to save lives. Cpl. Kyle Green with the Missouri State Highway Patrol related boating to driving a vehicle.
“Instead of wearing a seatbelt. It’s a good idea to wear your life jacket. You know you’re a great swimmer, but if something were to happen where you were to get thrown out of the boat and you were knocked unconscious, your ability to swim is pretty irrelevant at that point.” Green said.
Lake of the Ozarks Safety Stats
The Lake of the Ozarks Water Safety Council stated that nearly 650 people die each year. Out of that, 79% are due to drowning and 86% are due to not wearing a life jacket. That makes for about 10 people dying per day on the Lake of the Ozarks.
According to the U.S. Coast guard, Lake of the Ozarks is one of the most dangerous lakes in America.
What’s even more alarming is where the Lake of the Ozarks is used to getting 5 million visitors, this year it is estimated closer to 12 million!
Lake of the Ozarks Safety Tips
- Have a designated driver. With so many drinking alcohol on the lake, it is imperative to have a sober designated driver to stay alert. Even having a designated driver doesn’t promise you won’t get in a wreck. Drunk boating incidents are prominent on the Lake of the Ozarks.
- If there are small children present, put the phones away! Assign one adult to take pictures from their phone and text the pictures to the kiddos after you are off the lake. All it takes is a split second to look up and realize you don’t know where your child is.
- Wear a life vest. Many state that they are excellent swimmers, but if you fall out of a boat unconscious, it won’t matter how great of a swimmer you are. Ensure everyone wears a life vest!
- If you will be boating after dark, don’t go over 30 MPH on the lake! Keep in mind that even if you aren’t drinking, other boaters probably are. Be safe and stay vigilant!
