Bamboo straws without coatings (typically the coatings are beeswax) can have a grassy aftertaste (especially when left in hot water for an extended period of time).  Be sure to get the bamboo straw with the coating to avoid this.

Bamboo straws are meant to be cleaned with a brush – although you could throw it in the dishwasher, washing by hand is better because you can clean it more thoroughly.

Bamboo straws can repel mold due to its natural bacteria-fighting properties.

Bamboo straws are best used with cold drinks.  Hot drinks can break them down over time.

 

Pros and Cons of Metal Straws

Classy finish, mostly unbreakable, and metal straws are also rust-proof!

Metal straws can last for years – up to five years if you take care of it properly and keep it clean.

Metal straws don’t have any aftertaste.

Metal straws are incredibly easy to clean – just throw it in the dishwasher!

Metal straws, however, if not used rightly and consciously can hurt people.  People have been known to chip their teeth on metal straws. And there has been the odd case or two of someone being accidentally impaled by them!
