First and foremost, there are three different kinds of water you can drink from: tap water, filtered water, and bottled water. And each of them has its advantages and disadvantages. The Environmental Working Group, or EWG, tests Missouri’s tap water once a year, and the results are interesting.
For one, there are eight contaminants in our tap water which have been detected above health guidelines. This means the contaminants exceed levels which have been deemed safe. There are another 15 contaminants in our tap water which are lower than the standards set by the EWG. If you ask us, this is good information to know. We strive to understand what exactly is going into our bodies and our families’ bodies when drinking straight from the tap!
Another interesting fact is One of the things we’ve seen is that people are buying bottled water by the case because they say it tastes better. While the FDA oversees bottled water and the EPA regulates tap water, they are eerily similar. Let’s further delve into the pros and cons of tap water, bottled water, and filtered water.
Tap Water, Bottled Water, and Filtered Water
Tap Water
For one, there is a lot of lime in tap water. This is what creates that white buildup in your appliances, faucets, showerheads and even in plumbing pipes. Tap water is treated with chemicals in order to kill microorganisms and bacteria. According to an NRDC report, nearly 77 million Americans got drinking water from systems that violated federal protections in 2015, and more than a third of this number relied on systems that did not comply with standards put in place to protect health. Among some of the other things found in our tap water are lead, pesticides, chlorine, fertilizer, and pharmaceuticals.
Bottled Water
Bottled water is very expensive compared to tap. Where you can get gallons of tap water for pennies, bottled water costs dollars. Additionally, bottled water not only adds to the growing plastic epidemic in our oceans and landfills, but they have also been known to leech chemicals into the very water they contain. Many of these chemicals mimic the hormone estrogen which can lead to many health issues.
Lastly, In 1999, after a four-year review of the bottled-water industry and its safety standards, NRDC concluded that there is no assurance that bottled water is cleaner or safer than tap. In fact, an estimated 25 percent or more of bottled water is really just tap water in a bottle—sometimes further treated, sometimes not.
Filtered Water
Filtered water is some of the safest drinking water available to people. Filtered water removes bacteria, microbes and other contaminants found in tap water. It is convenient, safe, and often has a much better taste than tap and/or bottled water. Purchasing a whole-home water purification system, however, doesn’t come without its cost. While the initial fee may seem high, people find that they end up saving money in the long run. Filtered water still only costs pennies on the dollar and is cheaper than bottled water.
Another option would be to purchase an under-the-sink RO water purification system, or a bottleless water cooler. If you have a well, purchasing a UV purification system would be handy.
In summary, the human body is roughly 80% water. We need to maintain our bodies in order to live optimally and being aware of what you are putting into your body is important.
