Bottled water isn’t all it’s cracked up to be – especially when one of the ingredients contained is BPA. Most bottled water release chemicals which act like the hormone estrogen. The chemicals which act like estrogen are both BPA (bisphenol A) and PET (polyethylene terephthalate). BPA turns on estrogen receptors in the body, and PET did the same. Surprisingly, glass bottles contain little to no estrogen-mimicking chemicals.
Why is Estrogen Mimicking Hormones (BPA) Found in Bottled Water Bad for People?
BPA is a chemical used to harden plastic and can be found in baby bottles, plastic drinking containers such as bottled water, drinking cups, and is also found in the lining of food cans.
In essence, it is an endocrine disrupter that imitates the effects of the hormone estrogen.
What’s worse? BPA is strongly linked to type 2 diabetes, heart disease and liver enzyme problems. While the jury isn’t quite out on PET, several studies suggest that when exposed to heat, PET leaches carcinogenic compounds and may also mimick estrogen in the body.
BPA poses risks to children. Aside from disrupting hormones, growth and development, it may also increase the risk of childhood obesity. In an article by The New York Times, they write, “Scientists randomly selected 2,838 children ages 6 to 19 from participants enrolled in a larger health study and measured their urinary BPA levels. About 34 percent were overweight; nearly 18 percent were obese.
The rate of obesity in children in the highest quartile of BPA concentrations was about twice that among children in the other 75 percent, the researchers found, even after controlling for age, income, parental education, TV watching and diet.”
Solutions to Estrogen and Hormones Found in Bottled Water
While we may not be able to eliminate BPA completely from our bodies, there are several things we can do to reduce the occurrence of it in our lives.
- Eat/Drink fewer canned foods.
- Use glass containers.
- Quit using the microwave (especially when using plastic food containers).
- Use glass baby bottles.
- Stop buying water bottles and invest in a water filtration system.
In addition to plastic water bottles containing BPA or PET in them, they are actually much more expensive than the water out of your tap.
