Is Keurig Coffee Bad For You?
Using Keurig coffee machines and their coveted K-Cups has almost become a staple to businesses in America. And while it is convenient to make a single-serve cup of coffee, could it be that we are trading convenience for quality coffee, the environment and our health?
As an organization who provides coffee delivery services for offices and business in Springfield, Mo., and who provide Keurig coffee machines and K-Cups as a part of that service, we wanted to shed a little light on Keurig and some of the downsides of using this sort of coffee machine.
5 Downsides to Keurig Coffee Machines and K-Cups
-
Keurig Single Serve Coffee Cups are Costly.
It can cost upwards of $50 per pound of coffee. This is more expensive than Starbucks!
-
Keurig Single Serve Coffee Containers are Bad for the Environment.
Those little cups that go into a Keurig coffee machine are made with plastic #7 which is not biodegradable. And while some curbside recycling services do take plastic #7, unless all 26% of American coffee drinkers who use Keurig recycle, that is a lot of waste!
-
Keurig Single Serve’s Containers have Chemicals and Additives.
While some of the containers say, “BPA-Free,” they are still made with plastics and glue which can leach out when exposed to heat. This may have an effect on a person’s health and hormones.
-
Keurig Coffee Single Serves aren’t Exactly Fresh.
In a perfect world, coffee would be best kept in whole bean form, ground and then brewed roughly between 48-72 hours of roasting.
-
Keurig Single Serves Provide Less Coffee.
Most coffee shops make around 19 grams of ground coffee per cup. Keurig, however, only provides around 5 to 8 grams in their single serves per cup.
