How Flooding Can Contaminate Your Well Water
Wells covered by flood water can become contaminated with parasites, bacteria, and other pollutants – in some cases, e coli can get into your water supply. If that isn’t enough, there is also the danger of electrical shock, and potential damage to your well pump, pressure tank and pipes.
Debris, sediment, sand and other pollutants (including sewage in some cases) can be carried by flood waters into your well even if your wellhead isn’t covered by water. Especially wells over 10 years of age, and/or wells less than 50 feet deep can be impacted by flooding. Shallow and older wells with bad seals can be contaminated by surface water as well as flood water.
What to Do When Your Well Water is Flooded
Before going to disinfect your well, make sure there isn’t potential to get electrocuted. Exposed or damage wiring poses a potential threat of shock and electrocution. The best course of action would be to ask a professional service technician to come out and check your well.
Even services such as emergency shock chlorination doesn’t always solve the problem. Sure, it can get rid of odors, and disinfect bacteria, it doesn’t correct the source of the issue. For example, if bacteria and parasites are entering your well water supply from a damaged septic tank, bacteria and parasites may continue to enter into your well water after shock chlorination.
Another downside to shock chlorination is that it can loosen up limescale (a hard off-white deposit found on your showerheads, faucets and in your appliances which is a result of hard water), and other mineral deposits which can clog valves and fixtures in your home. Keep in mind, shock chlorination doesn’t remove all contaminants. Nitrate, an acute contaminant, is a prime example of this.
