Water bottles are more dangerous and harmful than many people think. Picture this: you just finished working out at the gym, and you’ve finished your water from your water bottle, so you decide to purchase one from the vending machine in the gym lobby. You pay $1 or $2, open it up and take a sip – unbeknownst to you, you’ve just ingested several chemicals and endocrine disruptors.
In fact, one bottle of water can contain more than 24,000 chemicals including hormone disruptors! Here’s the skinny on water bottles and bottled water.
6 Dangerous Secrets of Water Bottles and Bottled Water
-
Don’t reuse water bottles.
Water bottles labeled with the number “1” or “PET” is meant to be used only once and they give off dangerous chemicals when exposed to the elements.
Also, water bottles labeled 3, 7, V, or OTHER also release chemicals. Plastic bottles labeled 2, 4, and 5 are relatively safe.
-
The labels can be misleading.
Many water bottles labeled as “drinking water” or claim to be from natural streams may actually be municipal tap water.
-
Expensive.
Buying bottled water at the store, gym or gas station is not only expensive, but often you are paying MORE for water with chemicals in them. In fact, bottled water costs about 2,000 times more than tap water.
-
Contaminated.
Laboratory testing conducted by Environmental Working group found that popular brands had mixtures of 38 different pollutants. Some of these included bacteria, fertilizer, industrial chemicals, Tylenol, cancer-causing chlorination by-products and even endocrine disruptors.
-
Hormones.
Hormones found in bottled water induce estrogenic effects in a human cancer cell line. Not to mention tiny pieces of plastic are often found in the bottled water as well (most likely from the packaging).
-
Environmentally unsustainable.
Creating plastic bottles and transporting bottled water not only expends a lot of energy but produces 2.5 million tons of carbon dioxide. Producing the bottles requires the equivalent of more than 17 million barrels of oil.
Solutions to Bottled Water
- Receive a free tap water test and choose to filter your water out of the tap instead of using plastic bottles.
- Invest is a glass or stainless-steel water bottle. Even plastic bottles labeled “BPA-FREE” may contain hormone disrupting chemicals.
- Utilize refilling stations at airports and parks instead of purchasing bottled water.
In summary, buying bottled water not only puts your health on the line, but it puts a strain on our environment and our wallets! If that isn’t enough, more often than not, we are paying more for the same water that comes out of our tap, except bottled water has significantly more chemicals in them.
