![Plastic in rainwater. It’s raining plastic! It’s been found in our tap water, ocean and even rainwater. At least that’s what a survey found in Denver and Boulder, Colorado. While scientists couldn’t find it with their naked eyes, they did happen to find it using a binocular microscope. In fact, plastic was found in 90% of the samples in fiber form. Plastic has been a growing problem throughout the world. What once was solving a problem via containers, bottles and the like has now become the problem. We have the sea of plastic in the Pacific Ocean, plastic bottles filling up our landfills and now, microplastic particles in our rainwater. “Microplastic is a new atmospheric pollutant,” says Deonie Allen, a researcher at EcoLab in the School of Agricultural and Life Sciences. In essence, microplastics are very tiny pieces of plastic waste. While we have known for some time about their presence in oceans and waterways, we are just now starting to look for the presence of them in the air. Allen and colleagues collected microplastics over five months using atmospheric deposition catchers. Researchers couldn’t find the source of the microplastics – there was nothing within a 60-mile radius of the region. No one knows how far microplastics can travel. 420 million tons of plastic was produced in 2015 alone. Plastic typically starts out as bottles or packaging, and while it degrades over time into microplastics, they don’t simply disappear. Aside from wildlife and different ecosystems being exposed to microplastics, humans are as well. The ramifications of this pollution are still unknown, but we do know that it has taken a toll on wildlife and sea life. And it doesn’t end there. Media reports of microplastics in drinking water first came up in 2017 and were followed by other scientific publications in 2018.
